7 Great Snow Toys for 10 Year Olds

Here are 7 of the best snow toys for 10 year olds to take your child’s winter experience up a notch.

RAILZ Snow Scooter

You don’t have to head to the slopes to give them the thrill of whooshing through the snow on a snowboard. This one works on flat snow-covered surfaces with just a push of the foot, and it’s a blast on powder-covered hills as well.

You can adjust the height of the handle to accommodate riders of varying sizes, and the handle folds down to make taking it on the go and storing it easy.

GoFloats Winter Snow Tube

This snow tube ensures all eyes will be on you when you hit the slopes. Available in a unicorn, penguin, polar bear and flamingo giving you four characters to chose from or perhaps one for each family member.

Equipped with handles so you can hang on when bumps occur this tube is fun for the whole family. It’s also made with thicker material than most tubes to ensure it doesn’t rip or tear and it also fills up in seconds so you don’t waste precious sledding time.

Evelots My Very Own Snowman Kit

This 15-piece snowman set makes sure you have all of the eyes, mouth, scarf and more to make a friend for your front yard. Families can create snowmen and memories for years to come with these reusable pieces on snow days.

This snowman kit is extremely durable and includes a felt black top hat, coal-shaped eyes, mouth, buttons, a carrot nose, a red acrylic fringed scarf, and plastic pipe.

Ideal Sno Toys Sno-Art Kit

The kit comes with three Sno-Markers in red, green and blue. You simply mix the color packets with warm water in the bottles, and they’re ready to paint the town, or at least your yard.

The kit also contains snow molds in the shape of a star and snowman for extra creative fun.

Paricon Snow Castle Kit

Snow castles are where it’s at come the winter months. This snow castle kit comes in three plastic shapes — a large rectangle, a medium rectangle and a turret, because every snow castle needs turrets, of course. Each piece is made of sturdy but lightweight plastic and comes complete with a handle for easy building.

Wham-O Arctic Force Snowball Slingshot

Once they make all of those snowballs, they’re ready to aim and fire. But the blast off can be so much better with this snowball slingshot that will propel all those snowballs through the air at whatever or whomever they’re trying to hit. This one holds up to three snowballs at once. It also includes a target, for maximum aiming abilities. You simply load in the snowballs, pull back, aim and then send them soaring.

R/C Racing Hovercraft

If your kids are more interested in remote control toys like cars or drones, they might like something like this r/c hovercraft. This hovercraft can glide over snow and ice with ease, making it a great option for winter days when other remote control toys might be unusable.

Devils Doing Good & RAILZ Giving Back

devils doing good giving back

This November, RAILZ is proud to support Devils Doing Good and the “Dia De Los Muertos” event.  Proceeds from the event went directly to ICAN, a local nonprofit whose mission is to provide programs for at-risk youth to become responsible members of their community.

When RAILZ spoke with Devils Doing Good’s President, Kevin Bertoldo, we knew we had to share what this great nonprofit organization was doing. Here’s more from Kevin on Devils Doing Good and giving back to the community.

Tell us about the Devils Doing Good mission.

Kevin: “I’d be happy to. Our mission is to connect local businesses with local charities to provide economic growth — for both parties. We work with smaller nonprofits that are doing good things for kids, Arizona’s underprivileged families, and more. Working with nonprofits that don’t have the same kind of publicity as a larger organization is important to us. We want the nonprofits we support to receive more publicity and be able to give directly to those in need in a bigger way with our help.”

How did Devils Doing Good start?

Kevin: “My wife Jennifer Bertoldo and I started Devils Doing Good.  Jennifer’s passion for helping others and her interest in working with nonprofits is where it began. Both being Sun Devils and ASU Alum, this passion to help others helped us come up with the name, Devils Doing Good. We’ve now formed a group of volunteer Sun Devils, received our 501c3 status and have the support of the ASU Alumni Association. Christine Wilkinson, ASU’s Senior Vice President & Secretary, sponsored our very first event. This gesture meant a lot to us, and we hope to continue working with ASU in the future.”

For those that couldn’t be there, tell us about the November event.

Kevin: “The event was a great success! We sold out, with around 160 people in attendance. Attendees received 6 tequila tastings, a Reiki session or card reading, live music, dinner, and participated in our raffle. The winner of the Snow Scooter donated by RAILZ was a snowboarder — he was thrilled! All of the funds raised from the raffle went to support our chosen nonprofit. The event raised over 6,000 dollars for ICAN, going directly to the organization.”

Congratulations! We’re so glad to hear it was a success.

“We are glad too! Thank you RAILZ for your generosity towards the community and your sponsorship of this event. Devils Doing Good is hoping to partner with your business again in the future to support local charities together.” – Kevin Bertoldo

We like the sound of that. Thanks, Kevin!

After speaking with Devils Doing Good, our team wanted to share about the topic of community outreach. Here are a few words from RAILZ co-founder, Brad Birdsell.

Brad: “Thank you, Kevin, for the opportunity to be involved with the event.  We hope that you will continue to look to Railz for support in your events to raise money for local charities.  Special thanks to the featured charity, ICAN, who does such a wonderful job empowering the youth of our community.”

Brad, does RAILZ plan on giving back even more?

Brad: “Yes we do, we are currently looking for additional opportunities to give back to the community.  Especially with the holidays coming up, we want to be involved in making kids happy for the holidays.”

That’s so great! Why is giving back so important to RAILZ?

Brad: “Giving back is important to Railz because we are a family oriented business and we understand that the challenges for families are more difficult every day, and are more difficult for some families than others.  Giving back to help families overcome the challenges of our times is the least that Railz can do.”

5 Top Winter Sports For Kids

Instead of basketball, baseball, or football enjoy winter sports with your kids this season! Here are a few winter sports kids (and adults) can look forward to playing.

Here’s Our List of 5 Top Winter Sports For Kids

Snow Scootering

First on our list of winter sports is the RAILZ Snow Scooter. RAILZ took the idea of a modern kick scooter and transformed it to create a recreational snow scooter. Wanting to change the way kids and adults played in the snow, RAILZ successfully combined innovative design with traditional winter sports to create a snow scooter perfect for the chilly winter months! Best for younger riders, our ‘Youth Snow Scooter‘ model is made with tough, but lightweight, materials. With adult sizes available, the whole family can enjoy this sport close to home or on the hills at a local park or ski resort. (Video credit, Sam Tabor)

Skiing

winter-sports-kids

Downhill skiing can be a lifelong winter sport for you and your family to enjoy. Skiing on the bunny hills, playing follow the leader and iSpy are great ways to start. Ski instructors will teach as young as age 3, many kids can ski independently on a slope in just a few days. If you live close to the mountains, this can be an excellent way for the kids to get in some great cardio and play!

Ice Skating

winter-sports-kids

Young skaters can start on double blades skating at your local ice rink which can be a year-round activity, rollerblades are another option during the offseason. This can be a great way to work on balance, strength, and cardio! During the winter months, look for outdoor ice rinks that have been approved by the local police and recreational departments. If your little one is under 6 helmets are encouraged for use to prevent injury. Gloves, knee and elbow pads are also helpful for beginners.

Tubing & Sledding

winter-sports-kids

Along with sledding and tobogganing, tubing is an excellent way to get some exercise and have fun the kids! Tubes are lighter than a traditional sled and can be safer too. You’ll want to be sure to double check equipment for loose pieces, jagged edges, weight capacity, and check handhold stability. The best place to sled is on packed snow, in an area free of obstacles and far from street traffic. You’ll want to pick a hill that ends in a flat plane and double check for tree stumps or rocks hidden in the snow. Many communities have hills for sledding in the winter time!

Snow Skating

Last but not least on our list is the Snow Skate. With the RAILZ wheel and ski kits you or your kids can enjoy skateboarding year-round despite the weather. Ski kits can be added to the bottom of a skateboard and allow for an easy ride down bunny hills and slightly curved snow covered areas. Bring your Snow Skate to local parks, or your nearest slopes*.

Which winter sport is your favorite? Did we add one you’ve never heard of? Reach out to us, we’d love to hear from you!

*Winter sports are a great way to have fun, but with any sport, there is always a risk of injury. Be sure to cCall ahead to ensure ski resorts and sledding hills allow snow scooters. Ride with caution and follow all rules, regulations & safety warnings.

Easy Tricks To Do On a Kick Scooter: In the Snow

The winter season is upon us, and it’s time to break out the winter gaming equipment. With the new Railz Snow Scooter, you don’t have to be a professional to pull off some amazing tricks, even on your first ride. It’s designed and built Pro-Tough by RAILZ so you can shred the mountain or local sledding hill with confidence.

Not sure what tricks to do with your new ride? You can try many of the same stunts you would on a Railz Kick Scooter. Check out our guide below for a few to start with, in the snow.

1. The Bunny Hop – Hopping with Both Wheels

easy-tricks-kick-scooter

The bunny hop is the first move you’ll want to learn on your kick snow scooter. It’s a move that opens the door to whips, grinds and more. Once you’ve nailed the bunny hop, you might want to try a nollie – hoping off your front wheel instead of both.

 2. Tail Whip.

A good tail whip relies on your arm movement, although you’ll need some fancy footwork, too. You want to get as much air as you can before giving the tail whip a go. It’s best to start on flat snow surfaces before moving on to anything more on the slopes. Your back foot is going to kick the deck to get things moving, and your arms will take over to swing it 360, back to your starting stance.

3. Bar Spin – Spinning Your Handlebars.

Spinning your handlebars will require getting some air, but you can practice by hanging your front ski over some snow, quarter pipe or rock. If you’re spinning the bars 180, throw them from your most active hand (your writing hand) to your other side. When this feels good, try doing this in the air. Once you’ve done this, you can try a 360 spin by throwing your bars around until you can grab the same bar back with your throwing hand.

4. Manual – Riding on the Back Wheel of the Scooter.

Manuals are simple enough in theory, but in practice can take some time to get right. If you lift up too hard, your scooter will slide right out from under you, but lift up too little and you’ll struggle to keep your front ski off the ground. You’ll need decent balance to stay in manual. Once you’ve got the manual down, you’ll be able to build your speed going down the slopes.

5. Fakie – Riding Your Snow Scooter, Backwards.

Learning to fakie allows you to do tricks that require riding backward, either into fakie and out of fakie (like a 180 and nose whip). This move requires balance and control. The simplest way to practice is to approach a slope or pipe, slide up to it slightly and let gravity do the rest.

6. No Hander/One Hander – Taking One (or Both) Hands Off the Bars.easy-tricks-kick-scooter

Once you can get some air, test yourself by taking one hand off of your bars. You might be wobbly at first, but this is a step towards confidence and a sweet move that you can add to combinations later. When you’re feeling ready, you can stretch one arm right out or take both hands off of your bars and do the same.

Now You Know 6 Easy Tricks To Do On a Kick Scooter, In The Snow!

You’re ready to hit the slopes this winter with your Railz Snow Scooter! Enjoy yourself and share your experience with us. Do you have a few other snow tricks up your sleeve? We’d love to here more!

Evolution of Scooters

evolution of scooters

The evolution of scooters has taken a long, windy road over the last century. Other forms of transportation have stole the spotlight for approximately one hundred years, and kick scooters did not gain their widespread adoption until a few decades ago.

What’s the evolution of scooters? Well, we’re glad you asked.

Scooters were handmade for a little over one hundred years, and were made mostly out of wood, which wouldn’t typically fare well in poor weather. After wooden scooters, came the invention of metal scooters. Metal scooters, however, were clunky, heavy, and difficult to maneuver. Because of their multiple design flaws, scooters almost faded into obscurity.

Until 1990, and a man from Switzerland named Wim Ouboter. Ouboter’s younger sister had legs of different sizes, and could not operate a bicycle. Ouboter saw a need for a push scooter, and in 1996 created the foldable, aluminum scooter that we know and love today. It was marketed as a “micro skate scooter.” It was first released in Japan, and then in the U.S.

Scooters have since then permeated into American society, and can now be seen run by kids, college students, and adults.

Following its introduction into American culture, RAILZ took the idea of a modern kick scooter and transformed it to create a recreational snow scooter. As a sports goods development and manufacturing company, RAILZ wanted to change the way people played in the snow. The founders of RAILZ are all engineers with families. So, the motivation was to combine innovative design with rock solid traditional sports products for family winter fun.

Snow liftThe result? A scooter perfectly adaptable for the chilly winter months!

Now, RAILZ has created three scooters and various wheel and ski kits. This makes scootering around even during the wintertime simple and fun.

Scooters have evolved tremendously throughout the past century, and will continue to keep growing in the future. And RAILZ is proud to be at the forefront of that innovation.

An Innovative Kick Scooter: The History Of RAILZ

An An Innovative Kick Scooter: The History Of RAILZ

An Innovative Kick Scooter: The History Of RAILZ

Every great product starts with an idea, and RAILZ was no different. From a used-snowboard prototype to the many different products we have now, our goal has always been to motivate people to get outdoors and have fun. Many things have changed about our process and products since then, but our goal has always remained the same. Here is the story of how we went from our prototype snow skateboard to the various RAILZ products you enjoy today

Who started RAILZ?

Three guys, Eric, David and Brad, started RAILZ. We love snow sports and had a dream to change the world of winter outdoor fun with great inventions. We started with some old snow gear, a vision, and some good old fashioned trial and error.

Woodies2
How and where did RAILZ get started?

RAILZ started, in 2004, in the garage with an old snowboard purchased from Play it Again Sports.  We cut the board into pieces, bolted it onto skateboard decks in every way imaginable, but we could not get our snowskate to skate.  We scratched our heads. Went for a skate session, and had an “aha” moment.  Let’s design a ski to replace skateboard wheels.  We developed and patented the RAILZ ski which made our snowskate skate, and we were off and running.

How was the Snow Scooter concept developed?

Woodies1 (2)The concept for the RAILZ snow scooter came from one of our kids, Isaiah, when he said, “Dad, can we put RAILZ skis on my kick scooter?” Since then, the product has changed and developed into different types of scooters, allowing everyone to have fun in the snow and on the street. We now offer three types of scooters, each of which has interchangeable wheels and skis. The Full-Size Scooter, the Pro Scooter and the Youth Scooter. Our goal is for our products to be enjoyed by everyone year-round! That’s why we created scooters for every age and size of rider.

Fun Fact:

RAILZ snow scooters and snowskates are featured in a Disney movie: “Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure!

Why RAILZ Created The Crossover All Season Scooter

Why RAILZ Created The Crossover All Season Scooter

Crossover All Season ScooterIf you’ve ever wondered why three guys left their day jobs to manufacture kids scooters, we’ve got the answers. RAILZ started with an innovative idea based around enjoying the outdoors in the winter and our vision is no different now than it was then.

What is RAILZ all about? Read on.

Why did you start RAILZ?

We started RAILZ so kids and families everywhere could enjoy the outdoors, especially in the winter months. Over the years, it has expanded as we have developed different scooters, accessories and kits. RAILZ was started with the idea of having fun outside all year long, and it’s a vision we will maintain throughout the future of our company!

Who started RAILZ?

RAILZ was started by three guys that love snow sports and had a dream to change the world of winter outdoor fun with great inventions. We started RAILZ with an idea and a living room and expanded from there.

What was the purpose of RAILZ?

We wanted to change the way people play and exercise in the snow. Our purpose is to give kids and adults a new way to get exercise while having fun and not even know they’re exercising, like so many other great sports.  This was our original vision and continues to be.

What was the inspiration behind RAILZ?

Our main inspiration and industry changing invention came from one of our kids when he said “let’s put skis on my scooter.” Our kids wanted to use their skateboards and scooters in the winter. We decided to try it out, and after several failed prototypes, we were successful at creating a fun winter toy for our kids.

What was the original vision behind RAILZ?

We wanted to create the next big thing in the snow industry since the snowboard. We started with an old snowboard and after several years and different models, we now have three scooters and various wheel and ski kits.

7 Ways Kids Benefit From Using Scooters

benefits from using scooters

Scooters are fun and a cool way for kids to get some light exercise for their body and mind.

Here are 7 benefits from using scooters.

1. Scooters are fun

Scootering is fun, hands down. Scootering is a great way to get fresh air and enjoy the interesting sights and sounds around you. The sensation of gliding over pavement with the wind in your hair is something that walking cannot provide. If you and your children are going to the park, or somewhere that requires a lot of walking, using a scooter avoids the less desirable elements of walking, such as sore feet and tired legs. It’s pretty hard to say that you are bored and tired when riding a scooter! Shop our children’s kick scooter here

2. Develop balance

One of the many benefits from using scooters is it helps develop a child’s balance. A firm kick is what first powers a scooter, but balance is what directs the scooter. Scooters teach kids how to balance using their weight, which helps develop muscles in their upper bodies.

3. Build confidence

With the development of balance comes improved self-confidence. Success in scootering, with simple activities and attainable goals, such as riding around the entire park, builds a child’s sense of competence. Energizing activities, like scootering, motivates kids! When kids are motivated and successful with their task they experience a higher level of self-confidence.

4. Develop gross and fine motor skills

Motor skills are any action that involves a child using their muscles. Riding a scooter helps kids work on coordination, endurance, and overall strength. The more endurance activities children engage in, the more energy they will have for other actives. Additionally, developing these skills on a scooter will help with future cavities that require steering, stopping and balancing, such as riding a bike.

5. Benefit your health

Scootering is physical activity, which has numerous health benefits. Physical activity strengthens the heart, helps keep arteries and veins clear, strengthens the lungs, strengthens the bones, improves energy levels, enhances emotional well-being, and more! Just a side note, scootering isn’t just for kids! Scootering encourages physical activity at any age which leads to a much healthier, happier lifestyle!

6. Enhance cognitive development

Kids enjoy making their own decisions and thinking for themselves. With scootering, children are given the freedom and independence to develop and implement their ideas. When children are given the chance to make their own decisions, they see themselves as capable of success. Exploring on a scooter gives children opportunities to explore their capabilities and experience play, which in turn builds imagination!

7. They teach safety

One of the final benefits from using scooters is scooters teach safety. Just like learning to ride a skateboard or a bike, kids will most likely fall when learning to ride a scooter. For that reason, we always encourage our riders to wear a helmet and other protective gear such as elbow and knee pads. Through the process of learning to ride a scooter, kids can understand the importance of protecting their bodies and the consequences of not doing so.
